My thoughts as a Faribault City Planning Commissioner
I feel compelled to share my reflections following last night's Planning Commission meeting.
The Planning Commission for the City of Faribault is a recommending body. The City Council makes the final decision, and can make decisions contrary to the recommendation of the Planning Commission. However, the Planning Commission is sometimes the only opportunity for public comment on a given issue.
What deeply impressed me was the breadth of public comment last night. People were gathered in the gallery to speak on a potential apartment complex, concerns about a garage expansion, logistics involving a house relocation, and some even watched the entire meeting without feeling compelled to make comment at all. Neighbors were simply present to participate and be informed community members.
As a Planning Commissioner, I was impressed by Faribault. Thank you. Difficult decisions are made easier when your neighbors create a respectful, civil environment to find the best path forward for everyone.
Last night only reinforced my conviction that the public comment must be valued, and must be made more accessible at every level. Last night only strengthens my resolve to increase transparency and bolster civic participation across our county.
